Technical Tuesday: Development of Innovative Single-Use Bioprocessing Film for Strength and Leak Resistance

Abstract:

Single-use system assemblies are increasing in use for Biopharmaceutical production processes, often requiring large volume transfer of liquid formulations. While the benefits of single-use technologies are widely recognized, the risk of leaks during handling, processing, transportation, and storage persists. Film improvements that were identified via customer feedback included a clean contact layer, superior strength, durability, toughness, and flexibility.

This presentation will highlight new methods of film development and design that improved the film characteristics which reduced the risk of bag leaks in large volume assemblies.

Shannon Cleveland is an R&D Manager and Technology Lead of Ultimus® film. Shannon started at Merck in 2006 and has a long track record of technical accomplishments, having contributed to multiple successful filtration product developments. Since 2018, Shannon has been a central innovator within the Single Use and Integrated Systems R&D team, contributing to breakthrough film and single-use bag improvements. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, USA.
